Academic State Champs
Chassell Township Schools recognized for an overall ranking of 27 out of 540 schools in the state.

Chassell Township Schools was announced as an Academic State Champion by Bridge Magazine on January 28, 2014.

Only 54 school districts in the state (top 10%) received this recognition.

To determine the winners, Bridge uses a value-added ranking system which measurers a school’s test scores adjusted for student family income, which is often a predictor of academic achievement. Essentially, Bridge’s Academic State Champions are being recognized for over-achievement, rather than achievement.

“Our school district has been consistent; this is the third year in a row that our students have been recognized as Academic State Champions,” said Superintendent George Stockero. “Chassell finished with an overall ranking of 27 out of 540 schools in the state, which is the top 5% of schools. Bridge Magazine awarded academic champion honors to the top 10%, just 54 schools. Bridge also ranked each grade tested. Chassell’s elementary ranked in the top 20% in the state, the middle school ranked in the top 10%, and the high school ranked in the top 3% in the state. Furthermore, of the 54 academic champions in the state, only 5 of the schools are in the U.P. We have also been recognized by U.S. News and World Report for having one of the best high schools in America. I am very proud of our students and staff. They, along with our community make Chassell Schools a special place.

A free online magazine, Bridge publishes in-depth stories about the most important issues and challenges facing Michigan written and edited by veteran, award-winning journalists. You can read more about the Academic State Champions at bridgemi.com.

“From big cities to farming communities, quality education is occurring in every corner of Michigan,” said John Bebow, president of The Center for Michigan, which publishes Bridge. “Our Academic State Champion series takes a close look at what these schools are doing right, in the hopes that their success can be reproduced throughout the state.”
